At International Rivers we strive constantly to improve our capacity to defend rivers and river communities. It is critical to continue to invite diverse and experienced volunteers to provide support and leadership to our staff. In this vein, please join International Rivers in welcoming two new members to our Board of Directors this March.
Sharon Khan
Sharon Khan is the Recruiting Director at Waterkeeper Alliance, responsible for expanding its global network of grassroots leaders protecting everyone’s right to clean water. Previously she served as the organization’s International Director growing and supervising work in over 30 countries, and as its Staff Economist successfully providing Waterkeepers around the world with the best defensible economic evidence for watershed protection. Sharon has lived and worked in Geneva, Switzerland where she consulted with the United Nations Environment Programme and with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, authoring publications on the costs and benefits of environmental protection and spearheading global leaders into action. In India, Sharon lived under U.S. diplomatic status and worked with high-level officials in the energy sector.
Sharon has an MSc in Applied Environmental Economics from Imperial College, London. She was born in Guyana, grew up in Canada, and currently lives in New York with two sons off to college. When she can, Sharon loves to spend her time in pristine waters around the world. Sharon says, “I am honored and excited to join the Board of Directors of International Rivers, to share my knowledge and experience with such a talented and accomplished group of river protectors.”
Carlo Scapinelli
Carlo Scapinelli is the CFO of Carbon Lighthouse, where he supports profitable models for energy efficiency in building construction to benefit climate protection. “I’m excited to join International Rivers where I know my skills and background will help make a high impact difference for global nature,” Carlo says. He has over 25 years of experience running finance and operational functions in multinational corporations and nonprofits. He is a trusted business advisor with a proven track record of successfully driving deals and decision making, designing and implementing strategies, planning human capital, measuring operational execution, and improving organizational performance and processes. He has worked around the world with World Wildlife Fund, Alcoa, and SunPower, among others. An engineer graduated from Universidade de Sao Paulo, he holds a Masters in Finance degree from IBMEC (Brazil), an Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting from CIMA (UK), and an MBA from The University of Chicago. He currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and two sons.
