SJVN: well equipped to develop the Rampur project?
Questions to the World Bank regarding the Indian dam building company Sutley Jal Vidyut Nigam

The World Bank is considering financing the Rampur hydropower project in India’s Northern State of Himachal Pradesh. Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN, formerly the Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation) is planning to develop this project. SJVN has in the past only executed one hydropower project in India, the Nathpa Jhakri project, also partly financed by the World Bank. The 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri project suffered from severe project design and implementation failures, resulting in acute cost and time overruns.

IFC Support for the Proposed Allain Duhangan Project in India

Dear Mr. Wolfensohn,

In March 2004 the International Finance Corporation and a group of Indian NGOs had asked me to facilitate the public hearings to review and discuss the potential environmental and social impacts, and the proposals for mitigating those impacts, for the 192 MW Allain Duhangan (Hydropower) Project in Himachal Pradesh, India. The IFC was considering approving financial support for this project.

50 NGOs sent a letter to World Bank Executive Directors in response to the 2004 Country Assistance Strategy for India. In this letter, they reject the CAS for the inadequate consultation process, the lack of transparency during its preparation and the fact that its content reflects the Bank's inability to learn lessons from past mistakes.

This letter on the 3000MW Dibang Hydropower Project in Arunachal Pradesh to the Prime Minister of India was written by the Indian NGO Kalpavriksh in January 2008.

This letter from NDP Inspection Panel requesters and civil society organisations in Pakistan and internationally asks World Bank Executive Directors to order an independent monitoring of the implementation of the Action Plan, to discuss the forthcoming Action Plan progress report in a Board meeting and to demand a revision of the Action Plan.
